Our History
A
company’s history is not only a valuable tool as a record
of growth and development in a given area but reflects its ability
to respond to social and economic fluctuations as markets change.
After serving in WWII Paul S. Stovall, Sr. established his company
in 1947 behind his home on Dodson Drive in Atlanta, GA as Stovall
Mower and Cycle selling small air-cooled engine products and bicycles.
Since that time his company has remained strong through diversification,
customer support, dedicated employees, and strong family ties within
the organization.
After incorporating in 1957 and changing the name to Stovall & Company, Inc., the company continued to sell retail and expanded into industrial air compressors and the two-step distribution of quality power equipment lines like Snapper Mowers, Weed Eater, Briggs & Stratton and Tecumseh. In the late 1960’s the company continued to grow and required additional facilities to accommodate the growth of the different sides of the business. During this time the “Snapper” brand of mowers became a household name through promotions such as driving a Snapper mower up Stone Mountain or how long will it take for a Snapper mower to circle “Braves Stadium”.
Stovall continued to grow with its direct sales and service to golf courses, parks & recreation, housing authorities and commercial contractors. In 1973 the company moved 5 miles away from its original facility at 948 Bankhead Avenue in Atlanta, GA to a 30,000 sq ft facility on 5 acres located at 1198 Howell Mill Road. This division of the company sold products such as Kut-Kwick, Roof Mowers, LeRoi Compressors, Ransomes Golf Equipment, Hahn Sprayers, Turf Vac and Roseman Reel Mowers.
The Atlanta market grew rapidly in the 1980’s and our customer base was moving further away from our single store in downtown Atlanta. By 1985 Stovall had established an additional store in Gwinnett County on Pleasantdale Road and another in Cobb County on Hwy. 41. These two new locations would continue to sell and service the same products but provide local service to the residential and commercial contractors.
In 1991, Stovall acquired the distribution rights of the Cushman,
Hustler and Rain Bird Golf product lines and combined these lines
with our existing golf lines such as Ransomes PLC. This acquisition
doubled the company’s presence in the golf and commercial
equipment market immediately requiring the establishment of another
division of the growing company. The golf equipment division continued
to grow throughout the 1990’s with expansion into S. Carolina
and N.W. Florida as the game of golf became more popular.
In 1996 Stovall purchased the assets of Mills Irrigation, a service
oriented company with locations in Pensacola and Ft. Walton Beach,
FL. This purchase gave us the opportunity to open new doors and
to expand into commercial turf irrigation and explore other markets
outside of our home base of Atlanta, GA.
In 1999 our primary golf equipment product line offering of Ransomes-Cushman-Ryan
was purchased by Textron, Inc. aka Jacobsen. Shortly after this
buyout Stovall acquired the Jacobsen line and continued with the
products until February 2003 when it was no longer a profitable
endeavor to be involved with Textron.
Removing the existence of Textron in our company was only the first bright spot of 2003. By the end of 2003 we opened three wholesale nurseries in Peachtree City, Braselton, Cumming and a fourth in Covington in 2005.
From a single location in 1947 to 14 locations throughout the region and over 100 employees, our company has proven to have the ability to change, move forward and maintain a strong relationship with its customers.
